Description
Immerse your team, class, or clients in nature to learn about designing for the needs of both humans and all life
Using a sensory exercise to connect participants to nature and non-human personas to give nature a voice—plus other exclusive innovation tools— this workshop will take your class or team on an exciting design challenge to create a life-centred solution for human needs while also respecting the needs of the nearby plants, animals, and environments.
Inspired by the Life-centred Design Lab workshops in Sydney and Italy, this workshop kit has everything you need to facilitate the workshop in a place of nature—tools, instructions, in-nature rules, and more!
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
Supporting the shift from human-centred to life-centred design, the Life-centred Design in Nature Workshop introduces students to designing for more than human needs to nurture Earth’s biodiversity and multi-species co-existence using sensory awareness and non-human personas.
Facilitated in a place of nature, participants learn to design for more than human needs through sensory, research, design, and discussion activities and finish with a discussion about how their design practice can become more life-centred.
WORKSHOP DURATION
Approximate time: 4.5 hours or more, depending on the number of participants.
More participants/groups require more time for the discussion and presentation steps.
ABOUT LIFE-CENTRED DESIGN
Human-centred design has helped humanity evolve and prosper but at the cost of what it takes from the environment and how it impacts less privileged communities. Life-centred design expands human-centred design to include the needs of all life—people, animals, and planet—in design and decision-making.
WHO THIS IS FOR
Creative professionals and students of all practices, of any age or experience level
OUTCOMES
Participants will learn:
- How to think about themselves and their projects as part of the greater planetary ecosystem
- Grow their awareness of other lifeforms and their impacts upon them
- Experience mindsets and skills to include this awareness and the needs of other lifeforms when designing
Specific life-centred design skills learnt:
- Non-human Personas—How to understand the needs of non-humans (plants, animals, etc.) to give them a voice in design
- Multi-specie Design—How to design for the needs of all life, including people, plants, animals, microbes, and the relationships between them.
