Earth Tongue
Land Unfill #1
A life-centred design fiction
Earth Tongue is the first artwork in the Land Unfill Series—artworks made from urban waste that are then storified as things from the future (design fictions)
About the Land Unfill project
The Life-centred Design Lab collects dumped human-made objects to keep them from adding to landfill and composes them into unique artworks .
A futuring exercise is then practised on the artwork to imagine it as a design fiction, an artefact from the future it represents—a world where all humanity lives in a more respectful and harmonious relationship with the planet.
Design fictions are prototypes of imagined artefacts created from speculated futures, but the futures and artefacts are usually designed first, and then the prototype is created. Through Land Unfill’s ‘build first, imagine second’ process, the artwork is reverse-engineered into a design fiction.
