THE LIFE-CENTRED DESIGN WORKSHOP PART 1

Do Less Harm
with Design

A lifecentred.design workshop in which you’ll discover design strategies and business models to reduce carbon, waste, pollution, and exclusion to start aligning with global goals

Overview

You want to reduce the environmental and social harm of your activities—what and how you take from the earth, and any waste and pollution you give back.

Join us for a lifecentred.design session in which you’ll discover the design strategies that reduce carbon, waste, pollution, and exclusion and learn how to minimise their uses and impacts.

In this 4.5-hour workshop, you’ll also learn how to foster the three life-centred design pillars using system thinking, circular and inclusive design, and applying to UX, UI, and content. And we’ll enlist the help of behavioural design to inform your users and inspire their own life-centred behaviours.

The output of these strategies can support ESG commitments and complement existing carbon reduction, energy transition, and sustainable commitments.

Aim

This workshop aims to teach you how to make design choices in terms of low energy use, safer and sustainable material choice, higher inclusivity and accessibility, and user responsibility, to start aligning your work with global goals for sustainability and social justice.

Designing physical products and experiences with low energy use and high inclusivity that also look and feel exciting can be a challenging process, so you’ll learn the basics with hands-on activities and tools you can keep.

You’ll get to experiment with different tools and hear each other’s experiences. Through this process, you’ll enrich your team’s learning, from decision-makers higher up to designers working at the coal-face, so that you emerge aligned with a common mindset that helps you consider more than human needs while still achieving business goals.

Who is this for?

This workshop spans design and business innovation, and how they are co-dependant, so it is suited for both designers and business decision-makers, of all ages and experience levels.

  • Industrial designers, urban designers, architects, and teams—This workshop is focused on actual design strategies, so it is most suited for designers and teams, of all ages and experience levels
  • Product owners, Business Owners, Decision-makers—The innovation strategies include exploring new business models, so it is also suited for those who make business and budget decisions

Damien Lutz

A veteran UX/UI Designer, researcher, and writer, Damien has spent over a decade in design, and since 2017 he’s scouted the fringes of design for ways to fully realise it as a superpower for good.

In 2021, he produced the Future Scouting speculative design game, book, and hub to help designers invent things from the future to guide today’s decisions.

In 2022, Damien produced The Life-Centred Design Guide, hub, framework, and toolkit to expand human-centred design to reduce its impact on the world. Through further experiments and workshops, he also produced The Non-human Persona Guide, method, and toolkit in 2023 to give nature and vulnerable humans a voice.

Join Damien to delve into new ways of thinking and designing that aim to design a thriving existence for all life.

I am the voice of the trees who were taken to make the product I speak from.

We, the trees, gave shade, clean air, homes for countless creatures, and the gift of oxygen for you to breathe. We cooled the earth, held the soil, and stored the carbon that would have otherwise harmed you.

Now, as a user of this product, you are part of this legacy, and a custodian of the things we once were.

I ask you to honor the role we played for your planet. Where we are taken, help new trees rise, and protect those who still stand tall. Nurture them as they nurture you, for your future is rooted in our regeneration.
